  • Introduction.

For reasons best known to themselves the departure of the squad to, and the build-up for, the ACC Twenty20 competition in the UAE was surprisingly low key. OK, so perhaps it is not of particular significance internationally, more a bit of fun really? It’s just that after all the whoopla following the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes it just seems a little surprising. However, perhaps the HKCA knew something we didn’t as, as events unfolded in the UAE, we didn’t exactly cover ourselves in glory. Indeed, Howzat’s not even going to bother covering Hong Kong’s involvement in the play offs for 9th and 10th place against Qatar, which really is irrelevant.

    5 matches - 4 losses.

  • Those photographs are sealed LAPD evidence, never released to the press or the public. The weekend before last she had taken Untitled home with her, as promised.

OK, so could the four defeats have been predicted? To some extent that depends on how you view the opposition. This is an ACC competition and on the current ‘senior team’ ACC rankings Hong Kong are 1st, UAE 2nd, Afghanistan 3rd with Singapore 5th spot; Saudi Arabia in 10th and China 17th.

Tais said that they `fear cold steel, I smiled back, pushing the doorway open and then stepping inside, my sword held at the ready, the awful sense of EVIL now almost overpowering. Maybe, she thought, it was time to tell him the truth.

Poaching Players - it just isn’t cricket

Written by howzat on August 5, 2009 – 10:01 am

Here at the ‘Howzat’ office we’ve been thinking how many times have the Kowloon Cricket Club won the Sunday League title? Yes, yes, we all know they won the league last season, losing to Optimists in the knock-out final, but how many times previous to that? The first port of call we tried was the KCC website itself, but well it doesn’t really have any information about the KCC cricket teams, let alone their achievements. Perhaps that says something about KCC in itself? Next we tried the HKCA website, after trawling through the all the available years data we came up with just one victory in that competition, 2003-2004 when the Templars won it. Unfortunately there our search came to an end as the HKCA website only has records back to 1995. So, to the best of our knowledge since 1995, KCC have actually won the coveted Sunday League award - once!

    ACC Women’s Twenty 20 Championship

Written by howzat on July 14, 2009 – 6:17 pm

Held in Malaysia in early July the Hong Kong ladies team simply swept into the final having brushed aside all of their opponents. It wasn’t just that they won all of the league matches leading up to the semi-finals, but the way in which they won their matches. In their league group were; UAE, China, Kuwait, Oman and the hosts Malaysia. The wins recorded by the Hong Kong Ladies in these matches were respectively: 9 wickets, 10 wickets, 104 runs, 136 runs and 92 runs.

  • Man, human or not, Kyrian will kill him if they ever cross paths not something you need to cope with this time of year. When he tried to look into the mind of any one of the sailors, it was as if he was looking through it, into someone else's mind, and then through that, and into someone else's, in a kind of infinite regress.

He would profane them, Niniane said hotly, and put them to the use of that God who would drive out all other Gods ... His expression was solemn; his husky voice was so soft that it was difficult to hear him over the thrum of the fans.

    Qualifying Leagues.
Before the Twenty20 World Cup began earlier this month I commented to someone else that I thought England would win. I have to be honest and say that as soon as the opening game was over, between England and The Netherlands (Holland) - I was doubting the wisdom of my prediction. It was perhaps quite fitting, on a wet and dull early summer evening at Lord’s; that the opening ceremony was cancelled and we went straight into the opening game.

Under 19s win the ACC Trophy Elite

Written by howzat on June 22, 2009 – 10:04 am

Well done and many congratulations to the Under-19 squad and their managers on winning the ACC Trophy Elite earlier today, in Kuwait. Playing in the final against Afghanistan this was potentially no walk in the park for the Hong Kong youngsters; with the Afghan Under-19s playing with all the composure and confidence of their own senior team. However, an inspired captain’s innings and some great work leading in the field saw Hong Kong win comfortably in the end.

    Domestic season 2008-09 summary

Written by howzat on June 22, 2009 – 9:55 am

Starting with the men’s Saturday league - the conclusion of the league matches saw Hong Kong University CC claiming first place with 111 points, four more than runners up HKCC Nomads. LSW Warriors CC, who were invincible in this league last year, could only manage 7th place and played an elimination final against Lamma CC, placed 6th, to progress to the final knock-out rounds. For LSW, heavy defeats by Laguna Valley and Gap Ramblers being very costly in lost points. Newcomers to the LSWCC fold - St Georges - performed well, managing to finish 8th, just one point behind the Warriors. Whilst LSW St Georges lost their elimination final against KCC Tartars - the Warriors beat HKCC Gap Ramblers in theirs. However, their semi-final against HKU was abandoned due to rain, meaning that HKU automatically went through due to their higher league placing. The final, between HKU and HKCC Nomads was also a wash-out; resulting in, quite rightly, HKU being named Saturday League Champions.

    The Independents are coming

Written by howzat on June 22, 2009 – 9:47 am

Its little wonder that the posts of HKCA President and Chairman are being challenged at this years AGM by members of the Independent Cricket Clubs. Both President - Terry Smith and Chairman - Darren Tucker, are being opposed by Captain Shahzada Saleem Ahmed and Sohail Murshed respectively. In what many will see as a rare show of solidarity between Pakistan Association CC and Little Sai Wan CC; at the behest of the Independent clubs the PA President and LSW Vice-President are determined to no longer simply acquiesce to the dictates and whims of the Hong Kong CC and their ally the Kowloon CC.  Read more »

    Lahore, Pakistan, March 3rd 2009

Written by howzat on March 3, 2009 – 6:16 pm

It is with immense sadness that Howzat finds itself commenting on events in Lahore earlier today. Although the reasons for the terrorist attack perpetrated against the Sri Lankan team are currently unknown they will, undoubtedly, be ones to do with politics and nothing whatsoever to do with cricket. Although there will be repercussions of this attack for cricket, indeed for sports in general, in Pakistan; it has to be hoped that they then don’t develop into repercussions across the whole region. Coupled with the attack on a group of Kiwi supporters when New Zealand toured Pakistan in 2002  - who knows when a team will again be prepared to tour in Pakistan? It is also almost ironic that the Sri Lankan team agreed, at short notice, to replace India for this test series; when India decided their security could not be guaranteed.

The CEO saga - part 2

Written by howzat on March 3, 2009 – 6:14 pm

For those of us still waiting to hear the fallout from the Executive committee meeting on the 19th, other than the learning that about half of the committee are against a CEO appointment, I thought it’d be useful to put forward a few reflections on events taking place several thousand miles away.

The HKCA CEO saga so far

Written by howzat on February 16, 2009 – 11:29 am

On Tuesday 10th Feb we learned a bit more from Darren Tucker about the CEO post - it being required to deliver on the will of the key stake holders in the association … “ to particularly address: Grounds, Development of the game locally, Sixes, Sponsorship and China”. His order, not mine and whether there’s any precedence in it we’re not sure. So, let’s first consider those 5 points for an incoming CEO.  Read more »

A moment later a Blue Devil entered the room from the far side, walked through it, and left through a doorway off to the left. On the theory of the Magicians, power increases as the sun is approached, the inhabitants of Earth being more highly infused with the magical force of Our Star than those of Mars, and they again more than those of great Jupiter, gloomy and disastrous Saturn and Uranus, or Neptune lost in star- dreams.
